Teaching Philosophy
I believe that a good teacher needs to educate the 'whole' child. Our task is to provide the tools necessary to foster the development of the individual child. The intellectual and emotional aspects of a child's mind are equally important. Educators must understand how students learn best and how to build skills that nurture social and emotional wellness. An interdisciplinary approach integrates subject areas into child-centered, project-based learning.
The social and emotional components of learning are a constant. Teaching critical thinking and problem solving skills helps students collaborate with peers and manage their emotions in predictable and complex situations. Interdisciplinary approaches help students connect to curriculum in meaningful ways, whereas compartmentalizing curriculum may result in a linear mindset . Through formative assessment, diary journals, anonymous letters to the teacher, class meetings, and collaboration with colleagues, families, communities, and support staff, teachers can effectively monitor the classroom environment, diminish conflicts, and increase academic performance.

Self-Belief and Trust Unlocks the Mind and Heart for Learning
Artifact:
This is an artifact from a student who came into my classroom in the last term of the year. She had many social and emotional barriers, especially in relation to trust. To help this student, I spent time getting to know her. I took a genuine interest in her hobbies. I helped her find her strengths and encouraged her to invest in her talents, such as writing and art. Through project-based learning, she was able to incorporate "herself" into her work. This sparked a renewed interest in learning. Slowly, this student learned to focus on the positive and build her self-esteem. She wants to become a writer some day. |
Connect to Home and Community
Artifact: teachers can help students stay connected to distant family members, friends, or communities. For this project, students created a "flat" Stanley and mailed it to a family member. The students were able to connect through technology and created either a digital journal, a poster, or a book.

An Open Door Policy
Parents, guardians, and families are are encouraged to visit my classroom before or after school to discuss concerns or ask questions. I met many parents on a regular basis in order to help their children succeed. Parents expressed their gratitude for helping them stay informed their children.
